Essential Security Measures
Strong Passcodes & Biometrics
Your first line of defence. Use a 6-digit PIN at minimum, or better yet, an alphanumeric passcode. Enable Face ID or fingerprint authentication for convenience without sacrificing security.
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Enable 2FA on all important accounts — email, banking, social media, and cloud storage. Use an authenticator app rather than SMS-based 2FA where possible, as SMS can be intercepted.
Regular Software Updates
Security patches are released regularly by Apple and Samsung. Enable automatic updates to ensure you're always protected against the latest known vulnerabilities.
Data Protection
- Regular backups: Use iCloud, Google Drive, or Samsung Cloud. Back up at least weekly so you never lose important data
- Device encryption: Modern iPhones and Android phones encrypt data by default when a passcode is set. Verify this is enabled in your security settings
- Secure messaging apps: Use end-to-end encrypted messaging for sensitive conversations
- Privacy settings audit: Review which apps have access to your camera, microphone, location, and contacts at least quarterly
Physical Security
- Quality cases & screen protectors: Protect against drops and scratches. A broken screen can expose data if touch input becomes unreliable
- Anti-theft features: Enable Find My iPhone / Find My Device. These allow you to locate, lock, or remotely wipe your phone if lost or stolen
- Device tracking: Consider setting up a trusted contact who can help locate your phone in emergencies
Online Safety
- Secure networks: Avoid conducting sensitive transactions (banking, shopping) on public Wi-Fi. If you must, use a VPN
- VPN usage: A reputable VPN encrypts your internet traffic, protecting against eavesdropping on any network
- App permissions: Only grant permissions that an app actually needs. A torch app doesn't need access to your contacts
- Safe browsing: Don't click suspicious links in texts or emails. Use the browser's built-in safe browsing features
- App sources: Only install apps from the official App Store or Google Play Store. Sideloaded apps bypass security checks
What to Do If Your Phone Is Compromised
- Change passwords for your most important accounts immediately (email, banking)
- Enable or verify 2FA on all accounts
- Check for and remove any unfamiliar apps
- Factory reset the device if you suspect malware
- Contact your bank if financial information may be exposed
