Immediate Actions (Do These Now!)
If your phone has just been exposed to water, follow these steps immediately:
- Turn off your phone immediately. If it's already off, do not turn it on. Power flowing through wet circuits causes short circuits and permanent damage.
- Remove the case, SIM card, and any accessories. This allows air to reach more of the phone's surface.
- Dry the exterior thoroughly with a soft, lint-free cloth. Shake the phone gently to remove water from ports and speaker grilles.
- Do NOT turn it on, charge it, or plug anything in. Wait at least 24–48 hours, or better yet, get professional help.

Common Myths About Water Damage
The Rice Myth
Putting your phone in rice is one of the most persistent tech myths. Rice does not effectively absorb moisture from inside a sealed phone, and rice dust can actually get into ports and cause additional problems.
Hair Dryers
Heat from a hair dryer can warp internal components, melt adhesives, and push moisture deeper into the phone. Never use heat to dry a wet phone.
"It's Water Resistant, So It's Fine"
Water resistance ratings (IP67, IP68) degrade over time with normal wear and tear. A phone that was water resistant when new may not be after a year of use. Also, water resistance doesn't cover all liquids — salt water, chlorinated pool water, and soapy water can all bypass seals more easily.
Prevention Tips
- Use a waterproof case in high-risk environments (beaches, pools, rainy weather)
- Never take your phone into the bathroom while showering — steam is just as damaging as submersion
- Keep your phone away from the edge of tables near drinks
- Consider a waterproof pouch for outdoor activities
